Indulgence Divine in Vittoriosa, Malta is a house steeped in history that once made part of an important merchant's house with its own chapel.
The building's golden hued stone tells stories from the 16th century and testifies to its rich past. The high ceilings, custom-made furniture and original artwork on the walls underline the historic charm of this unique home.
The building, which dates back to the 1500s, was purchased by host Aldo in 2008. After two years of intensive and sensitive restoration, it opened its doors to guests. Since then, Indulgence Divine has been featured in various interior design magazines and national British newspapers.
The design of the house is colourful, combining modern pieces with historical elements. Inspired by an antique aquamarine Murano chandelier, the color scheme offers a vibrant yet elegant atmosphere. The property is more than just a vacation rental - it is an experience that captivates with its thoughtful design and rich history.
Another highlight of the accommodation is the roof terrace, which is decorated with a variety of cacti and succulents. This sun deck invites you to enjoy a drink in the evening or breakfast in the morning.

ArchitectureDuring the restoration, great emphasis was placed on the use of traditional methods. Lime-based grout was used wherever necessary to maintain the historical integrity of the building, insulation was incorporated and natural air circulation was encouraged to minimise the use of air conditioning. In addition, old Globigerina limestone was reused to reduce the need for new materials and to preserve the original character of the structure.
EnvironmentInsulation, ventilation and solar panels have been introduced to reduce energy consumption. Rainwater is collected and used to water plants and flush toilets. To avoid single-use plastic, pumps for shower gel and shampoo and a Brita water filter have been mounted on the walls. Reusable bags are also available for guests. Emails and the blog also encourage guests to use less water and reuse towels.
As Valletta gets busier and pricier, in-the-know travellers in search of a historic stay are hopping across the Grand Harbour to Birgu/Vittoriosa. This Renaissance-inspired 16th-century property, aptly named Indulgence Divine, is a vibrant mix of ancient and modern tucked into Birgu’s labyrinth of medieval streets. It is less than five minutes’ walk to the main square, Inquisitor’s Palace, Maritime Museum and Malta at War Museum, and ten minutes to the nation’s oldest castle, Fort St Angelo.
It sleeps two, very comfortably, the huge double bed is set inside the former private chapel of the house, but there’s also an equally enormous sofa upstairs. The owner has refurbished with care, retaining a secret room as a library, spiral stairways, and roof terrace. He’s splashed bright colour here and there among more traditional tapestries and artworks and there’s Wi-Fi, a state-of-the-art kitchen and a rather glam walk-in double shower. The rate includes pickup from the airport and basic essentials on arrival. In addition to a couple of wine bars, Del Borgo and Il Forn, there’s a tiny osteria just across the alleyway and a handful of shops and bars.
One of the few exceptions is Indulgence Divine. This 16th century townhouse in Birgu was lovingly restored by London-based art director and producer Gattaldo and transformed into a space that is literally an indulgence of colour, design, retro nods and flashes of beautiful inspiration.
