At Im-Jaich, you wake up right by the water, with views of reeds, the protected lagoon, the small natural harbor, and the expansive Bodden landscape of Rügen.
The houses are nestled amidst lush greenery and are comfortably furnished. Large windows and terraces bring the landscape close to the living area. Even more important, however, is what happens outside: Otters can sometimes be spotted under the terraces of the waterfront houses, herons perch on the jetties, hundreds of swallows gather in the harbor during the summer, and bats migrate over the water in the evenings.
Behind this natural oasis is the family business im-jaich, founded more than 35 years ago by Dorte and Ingo Jaich and now run by their sons, Hans and Till Jaich. Water, harbors, and the question of how architecture can interact with its surroundings have always played a crucial role. The first three houses in Gustow were completed in 2014. Instead of turning this beautiful, tranquil spot into a large holiday resort, a small retreat was created here that minimizes its impact on the existing landscape. The houses themselves are designed accordingly: lots of wood, natural stone, and large windows, complemented by select 20th-century furniture classics. The rooms are spacious and bright, yet don't feel cold. Gustow is particularly beautiful outside of peak season, when the reeds change color and the area around the small harbor becomes even more peaceful. im-jaich's commitment to sustainability has received numerous awards, including the German Tourism Award in 2023. The company also focuses on research collaborations and exploring how tourism can function in sensitive natural environments.

The waterfront houses are intentionally designed to bring the landscape as close as possible. Large expanses of glass open the rooms to the water, making the reeds, sky, and lagoon part of the living space. At the same time, wood and natural stone create a warm, tranquil atmosphere. Selected 20th-century furniture classics add to the houses' distinctive character. The houses were built in collaboration with regional companies and im-jaich's in-house team. FSC-certified wood was used for the timber frame construction. The houses meet the KfW-40 standard and therefore require significantly less energy than a conventional new build.
The small harbor features a seasonally open bistro, deliberately kept simple. On the terrace overlooking the harbor, they offer freshly prepared tarte flambée and bagels, specialty coffees from an espresso machine, various drinks, and an à la carte breakfast.
The team is also closely connected to the region: all employees live nearby. Im-jaich offers various discounts and additional benefits for its staff. Furthermore, the company regularly supports (on a rotating basis) different youth organizations, sports clubs, and regional projects.
The Gustow nature oasis utilizes a photovoltaic system, battery storage, and thermal storage tanks, among other technologies. Modern heat pumps and a highly efficient district heating system further contribute to reducing energy consumption and, consequently, CO₂ emissions. The concept encompasses more than just energy supply. Thousands of trees and shrubs have been planted around the holiday complexes to create additional habitats for animals and plants. Green roofs and numerous bat boxes and nesting boxes are also part of the design. Furthermore, im-jaich has entered into a voluntary agreement with the WWF regarding the use of the water bodies. Especially in Gustow, where the houses are situated directly on a protected lagoon, the most careful possible management of the environment plays a crucial role.
The nature oasis includes a panoramic sauna area with various relaxation zones, a separate quiet room, and a lounge. The rooftop terrace offers sweeping views across the lagoon and the surrounding landscape. Use of the sauna area is included in the stay for guests of the accommodations.
