The exclusive work life retreat I-Am-Escape is located on the Reisenberg, surrounded by 70 hectares of forests and meadows with a view of the historic village of Friesach. A remote refuge was created here in the middle of the idyllic Carinthian cultural landscape, with a fantastic view of the Karawanks in the south and endless forested mountains in the north.
Kathrin and Bernhard Schluga are the hosts at I-Am-Escape. The house, which is over 200 years old, has been in the family for generations and was previously used primarily for agricultural purposes. Four years ago, they decided to renovate the farm and placed particular emphasis on the former stable, which now lovingly and traditionally serves as a place of well-being in nature. The aim was to create an inspiring place where people from different countries and backgrounds can find a retreat for new ideas. Here, where urban lifestyle meets rural intuition, screenplays, art projects and workshops are created.
The 18th century stable building with its old wooden beams forms the core of the design. The 250m² feel-good space with work area, chill-out areas and open kitchen is a place where you can be creative. The opening of the ceiling and the front glass facade in industrial style make the interior look bright and modern. The furniture combines mid-century and industrial design elements in a minimalist way and is accentuated with color by kilim carpets. The farm is surrounded by an idyllic outdoor area with a pool, sauna and hot tub.
The roof structure of the renovated courtyard houses six double bedrooms, each with its own small bathroom. Five bedrooms have a glass front for special views, while an additional loft-style bedroom on the upper floor provides an open view of the living area and terrace. All of the six rooms are designed in a similar way, but small nuances such as pictures on the walls, carpets and seating make each one unique.

ArchitectureThe renovation of the farm was carried out with great care to preserve the original structure of the stable as much as possible. This ensures that the farm remains seamlessly integrated into the surrounding region and harmonizes with the natural landscape in the long term. At I-am-Escape, close ties with the local community are of great importance. During the construction process, the owners actively worked with local businesses to ensure authenticity and support their neighbors. As a family-run business, they help to preserve and promote the region's cultural heritage.
FoodThe I-am-Escape focuses on culinary enjoyment and uses products from its own garden or the surrounding Reisenberg region for its yoga retreats. Many of the offerings, such as homemade jams and pickled vegetables, are lovingly prepared. The bread is sourced from the local bakery and, on request, special regional cheeses are offered. Excess food scraps are recycled by the chickens or disposed of sustainably. If required, a local chef is available to take care of the guests' culinary well-being. Alternatively, farm shops in the region offer a selection of regional and organic products that guests can explore on their own initiative. Workshops can also be booked or a local herb hike organized.
I-am-Escape employs local staff such as tour guides to foster a sense of community within the team. Employees also have flexible working hours and benefit from all the amenities the farm offers, including cars, accommodation, use of the facilities and the pool. The owners also strive to implement as many social projects as possible on their farm and support them with a 30% discount on the room rental.
EnvironmentThe private well provides fresh spring water all year round. Photovoltaic systems produce electricity in addition to the municipal power supply. In sunny seasons, production is sufficient for consumption. In the event of a power failure, the accommodation is equipped with a generator that provides full power for all buildings on the property. There is a biological sewage treatment plant and only biological and degradable products are used for showering or cleaning. Great importance is attached to waste separation and guests are asked to dispose of residual waste as well as plastic and other waste separately. Special materials such as aluminum are taken to the construction yard in Friesach. By managing their own forests and meadows, close cooperation with the local forestry company is maintained and nature and animal protection is promoted. The owners are aware of the uniqueness of their ecosystem and strive to reforest their forests with native tree species in order to create a sustainable forest that will be preserved for future generations.
Well-BeingIn addition to various relaxation options such as meditation, stress management and yoga, physical relaxation options are also offered. The heated spring water pool, which is located on a hillside overlooking the Friesach valley, invites you to relax and refresh. The barrel sauna next to the pool offers another opportunity for revitalization. A hot tub is also available to guests.
