Hostel Suomenlinna

Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland

Hostel Suomenlinna is located in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic sea fortress of Suomenlinna in Finland. Although the hostel is only a 15-minute ferry ride from the center of Helsinki, you feel like you are in another world - surrounded by sea and nature.

The building itself has a long history: it was built as a primary school over 110 years ago, later used as an officers' club and restaurant, before opening as a cozy accommodation in 2002. During the renovation, great importance was attached to preserving the original charm of the house. The furnishings are deliberately kept simple and authentic, many elements are made from recycled materials, and the protected building structure has been carefully preserved.

The hostel is run by the Finnish Camp School Association, which offers environmental and cultural education programs for school classes and other groups. By staying here, you are directly supporting the educational work surrounding the Suomenlinna World Heritage Site.

Guests can expect a warm, family atmosphere in a light-filled, historic house. A unique opportunity to experience Finland's history up close and at the same time enjoy the peace and beauty of the archipelago.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house was built in 1918 and is built to last. The building is a listed building and has been carefully restored to strict specifications to preserve its historic character.

FoodFair trade products and occasionally organic goods are on offer. All animal products are locally produced and over half of the meals served are vegetarian. In all areas, careful waste separation is important, including organic waste, metal, plastic, bottles and cans, paper, cardboard and residual waste.

The staff consists of people of different ages and backgrounds, and the gender distribution is fairly balanced. The hostel regularly organizes leisure days for staff and offers internship opportunities throughout the year. All staff also have free use of the facilities and accommodation and receive free breakfast and meals (when cooking for groups).

EnvironmentEnvironmental, socio-cultural and economic aspects are all taken into account in daily decisions. A sustainable tourism development plan is continuously followed and the achievement of goals is reviewed annually. The hostel also holds Hostelling International's Hi-Q'S certificate for responsible accommodation and the Sustainable Travel Finland label. Various aspects are measured regularly, including the proportion of organic waste, energy and water consumption, the number of vegetarian meals compared to the total, the sustainability of suppliers and partners, employee well-being and guest satisfaction.
