Hop Farm Beach

Söderhamn, Gävleborg County, Sweden

Hop Farm Beach is a digital detox retreat. Opening in late 2024, the Scandinavian-style cabin is nestled in a dense Swedish forest, just minutes from several pristine beaches.

Cole and Therese Roberts are behind this passion project. Theresa's family roots in this region, dating back to 1636, have enabled them to realize their long-standing vision: to create a place where you can find peace, experience nature, and reflect on what's essential.

The cabin deliberately has no Wi-Fi, no television, and no digital distractions. Instead, nature takes center stage. The forest becomes the living room, the walk to the beach provides entertainment, and cooking together or quiet reading becomes the true quality of the stay. The absence of screens creates space for genuine encounters, slowing down, and inner peace.

The interior is deliberately minimalist – clean lines, furniture by Danish designers, and dark, earthy tones create an atmosphere that blends modern aesthetics with natural comfort. Accessories such as bed linen, pillows, and towels come from Swedish manufacturers. The play of light inside changes depending on the time of day – in the morning, sunlight floods the open living area, while in the evening, the cabin envelops its guests in warm, protective darkness.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Hop Farm Beach Cabin was designed by renowned architect Mette Fredskild, whose expertise lies in hospitality architecture. Her minimalist style and sustainable approach were key factors in the decision. The cabin was constructed from surplus wood — demonstrating ecological responsibility. The outdoor facilities, such as the decking, were also built exclusively using local craftsmen and materials. After the cabin was delivered, they started to cover the site with so-called skogsmatta—natural forest soil. The long-term goal is to completely renaturalize the forest floor around the cabin up to the road and restore the forest to its original state.

The nearby town of Söderhamn is known for its vibrant youth and sports culture. Future plans include collaborating with local sports clubs to offer young athletes the opportunity to experience a digital retreat in the cabin. The mental pressure is particularly enormous in competitive sports – social media and constant digital presence further exacerbate this stress. A stay in the cabin is intended to help these young people unwind, get away from screens, and recharge in nature.

EnvironmentAn important note for international guests is the Swedish right of public access (Allemansrätten). It allows everyone to roam freely in nature, collecting berries, mushrooms, or flowers, as long as the environment and animals are respected. Guests are encouraged to leave only footprints and capture memories with their cameras – a camera is provided for this purpose.

Well-BeingThe entire concept of the cabin is based on the idea of putting away digital devices and taking a digital break. To ensure no memories are lost, a camera is provided and a private digital gallery is offered, where guests can upload their photos after their stay. A highlight is the sauna, which is complemented by the numerous swimming opportunities nearby. Hiking along the forest trails is one of the most beautiful activities in the area – the paths wind through ancient pine forests and along rocky coastlines. A dip in the Baltic Sea provides a refreshing post-sauna cool-down and offers the classic Swedish wellness experience of hot and cold. Future plans include boat tours through the archipelago and bicycle rentals until 2026, allowing guests to connect even more deeply with this unique landscape.
