Gut Pohnstorf

Alt Sührkow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

The guests wake up in the morning with the twittering of birds, look into the manor garden and maybe see a deer or a hare running across the large meadow. The manor is located on one of the few and highest hills in Mecklenburg, for this reason the guests enjoy a wide view of the forest and the fields.

The host couple, Kamila and Fabian Sösemann, appreciate the peace and quiet and the vast nature the most. In front of the manor house there are wide meadows and fields, behind the manor house there is a terminal moraine landscape with forests, hills and a small swimming pond. Gut Pohnstorf is also a paradise for ornithologists, who get to see rare birds such as the spotted eagle.

In addition to the proximity to nature, the spaciousness of the house stands out: a maximum of 30 guests share 1,000 square meters of living space. The apartments are designed with attention to detail. Old half-timbered houses or antique furniture meet designer lamps and modern art.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the von Stahl family had their seat on Gut Pohnstorf. In 1896, Itzehoe Heinrich Wessel, co-owner of the Portland cement factory, had a mausoleum built in the park during his lifetime. The manor house was built in its present form in the middle of the 19th century. During the GDR era, the house was the center of the village with “Konsum”, a kindergarten, a party hall, a post office, a library and many apartments. After the fall of the Wall, the house emptied and slowly fell into ruin.

In the dreary November 2017, the hosts discovered the property by chance, in December they decided to buy it and thus became owners of a property for the first time in their lives. In summer 2018 they moved to the 36-person village. Her new life in the country began. The doors were opened, the walls painted in color, seven jobs created, charging stations for e-cars installed, an e-bike rental facility set up and the former village center revitalized. The house is a family business and is run by Kamila, who worked in political Berlin before her country life.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe estate was built in 1850 and is a listed building. The building materials for the renovation, such as wood, field stones, bricks, clay and straw, come from the region. There is a lot of antique furniture in the house, or some that were made by regional carpenters. This is also the case with the latest project: a new bookshelf for the library. The walls of the manor house are adorned with paintings by Lothar Oertel, a renowned artist from the neighboring village. All trades and craft firms come from the region.

FoodThe guests receive a delicious breakfast with regional products: Cheese and sausage mainly come from the neighboring farm with its own production, the eggs from the direct neighbor. A baker on wheels comes to Pohnstorf twice a week and sells fresh rolls and bread. The homemade jams, which are made from their own fruit, are particularly popular.

The employees all live within ten kilometers. As far as possible, you can also work in the home office. The cleaning staff are trained regularly: There is a collaboration with Klara Grün, a 100% ecological room maintenance service whose products are used for cleaning. The hosts support the regional culture school and have organized an art auction and donated a portion of the auctioned pictures.

EnvironmentThere is an e-shuttle for guests so that a low-carbon journey by train is possible. There are charging stations available for guests arriving with their own e-car. A modern wood gasifier works in the cellar, in which wood from the region is efficiently converted into heat. This operates the central heating and heats the water. A solar thermal system on the roof supports the heating of the water. When there is good sunlight, almost all of the warm water comes out of the system. Rubbish separation is operated in the accommodation, all rubbish bins are labeled accordingly. The accommodation is cleaned with vegan and ecological means. The office always tries to work digitally in order to avoid unnecessary printing. Communication with the guests on sustainable topics takes place in personal conversations and in advance via the website or via Instagram.

Well-BeingYoga courses can be booked on request and there is a bicycle rental service with e-bikes, mountain bikes, excursion bikes and children's bikes available. Stand-up paddles can be used on the swimming pond behind the house. The surrounding lakes offer outdoor activities such as surfing and canoeing. Various cycling and hiking tours start around the property. And the hosts recommend a star tour, as Pohnstorf and the surrounding area is one of the least light-polluted areas in Germany.

Testimonials
