Green Haven

Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany

If you want to anchor in Germany's largest port city in a particularly environmentally friendly way, you should do so in Green Haven, Hamburg's first purely vegan accommodation.

Founder Christiane Bors, a trained hotel specialist and hotel business economist, was tired of constantly being confronted with wasted food and resources in the catering and hotel industry. At the end of 2014, she made her dream come true and founded her own bed and breakfast, in which she realized all of her ideas for a sustainable company.

Bors' primary goal: to make guests feel at home. and thats the way it is. In the cozy common room, the "galley" with kitchen, living and dining area, guests meet and exchange ideas like in a large family or flat share. There is also an exchange shelf where you can read books, CDs and other little things for something If the weather is nice, the vegan breakfast can also be taken on the terrace.

The Green Haven has three individually furnished rooms, a holiday apartment and a small construction trailer. The decor is cozy, following the name in a maritime style and mainly comes from used and upcycled materials.

In addition to bed and breakfast, the Green Haven also offers courses and advice on vegan life such as nutritional courses or cooking courses. Cultural events and events related to an ecologically vegan lifestyle also take place regularly.

Sustainable

ArchitectureBecause the building is rented, the founder has no influence on the architecture. When renovating the interior, however, care was taken to use natural materials, such as the wooden floor. The wall colors are vegan. Used materials were used to set up the Green Haven, and items that the operator had been given as a gift or were bought at flea and used goods markets. Many of the pieces of furniture and decorations are upcycled. This makes the accommodation colorful and individual: breakfast is served on different plates, while you sit on chairs in different colors and shapes.

FoodThe food in the Green Haven is completely vegan. We try to use seasonal products where possible, for example apples from the Altes Land near Hamburg. Only organic food comes into the kitchen, but the company is not certified organic. In addition, you can have Hamburg's first purely vegan delivery service deliver organic food (even with electric bikes).

Employees receive a wage that is somewhat above the industry average. Tips are donated to various social projects, such as the nearby refugee accommodation. An employee was found via the "Hamburg Budget for Work" project - a project that brings people from workshops for the disabled into the so-called first job market.

EnvironmentWhen the sun is shining, the Green Haven uses solar energy from the in-house solar system, otherwise green electricity is obtained from the Schönau electricity works. The heating is fired with green gas from Greenpeace Energy. Waste is separated into organic waste, paper, recycling waste, glass and residual waste. Lids from Tetrapaks are also collected separately. In the future, it is planned to purchase the food without packaging. We currently order in bulk packs where possible to reduce packaging waste. You can bring your own towels and bed linen. This is intended to motivate guests to bring their own laundry that they can continue to use at home instead of washing hotel linen after one or a few more nights. Mattresses, bedding, bed linen and towels are fair trade and organic as far as possible. In addition to meals, all consumables and cleaning agents are completely vegan.
