Grandhotel Cosmopolis

The Grandhotel Cosmopolis is much more than a normal hotel. The building, which had been vacant until 2011, once an old people's home in Augsburg's old town, was transformed into a great work of art by a group of artists. "Our goal is living together as people" say the makers. The building now houses a state-run community accommodation for 65 refugees, a hotel, a gastronomic establishment, an academy and plenty of space for art under one roof. The building itself offers a wonderful panoramic view of the old town of Augsburg, the Augsburg cathedral district and a well-cared for old linden tree in the tea garden.

The basic mood in the Grand Hotel is characterized by security, belonging, diversity and the feeling of being at home - all of these are pillars of the inspiring atmosphere. Guests are warmly welcomed here and immerse themselves in rousing creativity in which one finds the courage to try something new. Here you can actively shape changes and initiate innovations. Intercultural, enriching encounters are part of everyday life here. You can meet and learn from each other in the lobby, in the café, in the kitchen and at the dining table, in the hotel corridors, on the dance floor, at one of the many concerts. In the Grand Academy you can take part in various workshops and artistic formats.

What happens when tradition and the joy of experimenting mix? Voila: new harmonies! From Monday to Friday at 1 p.m. the bell rings for dinner and get together in the Grand Cuisine of the Grandhotel Cosmopolis. The international cooking team spoils the palate with cosmopolitan delicacies from all over the world.

It never gets boring, because plays, concerts, readings and gastronomic events take place almost every day in the cosmos of the grand hotel. The historic old town and the Augsburg Fuggerei are within walking distance. The local recreation area Siebentisch Wald and Lechauen are nearby.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe building is a former retirement home in the old town of Augsburg. Each room was individually designed by an artist. Up - and recycling of furniture and objects from household dissolutions was an integral part of the renovation of the building. The ensemble-protected building houses a state-run accommodation for refugees and a catering business.

FoodBreakfast in organic and Faitrade quality. Guests are cordially invited to participate in the common lunch table. Seasonal ingredients from organic farming are used, the vegetables come from the organic farmer Pfänder from the region. Here regional vegetables meet an international variety of spices. According to the kitchen philosophy, all dishes are exclusively vegetarian / vegan. You pay how much you can give: 4, 8 or 16 euros go directly to the continuation of the lunch table.

SocialThe urgent task of accommodating asylum seekers is linked here with cultural diversity and, above all, with an offer for everyone to participate. The »Grandhotel« will only be able to exist through active participation. The hoteliers bring creative ideas and play an important part in the (further) development of the project. All residents and guests can get involved in a current cultural and hotel business for the duration of their stay. The hotel offers a creative, flexible field of work, practical use of empathic communication as well as a flat and permeable communication structure. People with different backgrounds work here and are empowered in their independence and responsibility.

EnvironmentSustainability is the cornerstone of the concept, as far as possible we always work with local providers. The motto is upcycling first, if new purchases are necessary, attention is always paid to sustainable products. The garbage is of course separated.

Location + Directions

By car

There are no hotel parking spaces. The paid parking garage “Kolping Garage” is within walking distance. The next free overnight parking is at Stephingergraben or in Riedlerstraße (10 minutes on foot from the hotel).

With public transport

Augsburg is easy to reach by train from all directions. From Augsburg Central Station you can walk to the Grandhotel in 20 minutes. If you have a lot of luggage, we recommend taking a bus or tram to the Dom / Stadtwerke or Karlstraße stop. From there it is 3 minutes to the hotel.
