falkertsee13

Falkertsee, Carinthia, Austria

At 1,885 meters above sea level, on the shores of Lake Falkert in the Carinthian Nock Mountains, falkertsee13 is situated in a truly exceptional location.

In summer, the deep blue waters of Lake Falkert lie there, with alpine meadows and peaks rising behind it. Sometimes, cows graze right outside the window. In winter, this transforms into a frozen, glittering expanse amidst the snow. There are hardly any other houses around the cabin. On one side lies the lake, on the other, alpine meadows and rocks. As a result, almost no light is visible in the evenings, but the stars are all the more abundant.

The cabin was built in the 1970s as one of the first houses in Carinthia's highest-altitude ski village. The house number 13 still serves as a reminder that it was indeed the thirteenth house built here at the time. Owner Annette Payr, an interior designer from Munich, has carefully renovated it over the past few years. Her eldest son, who lives in the valley and is completing his apprenticeship there, takes care of the maintenance and repairs around the cabin. The idea wasn't to create something completely new from the old house, but rather to preserve its character and enhance it with contemporary elements. Accordingly, reclaimed wood and slate meet clean lines and copper-colored details. The decor is personal and unpretentious: warm wood, the scent of the wood-burning stove, and large windows that keep the mountain scenery ever-present.

There's also a private alpine spa with a sauna and a wood-fired hot tub. In summer, you can then step directly into the mountain lake; in winter, into the snow. When a blizzard rolls in and snowdrifts several meters high pile up in front of the cabin, the mountains reveal their truly impressive side. Hiking trails lead around Lake Falkert, there's a natural ice rink in winter, and the ski area is right on the doorstep. The Falkert mountain, with its Falkensteig and Murmelsteig via ferratas, is also easily accessible.
