Kunterbunthof

Züsow, Baltic Sea, Germany

Anyone arriving here immediately feels that special sense of freedom and belonging. The Kunterbunthof is beautifully situated amidst nature, between the Baltic Sea and the Sternberg lake district.

After years of traveling between the Andes and the Himalayas, Andre found his anchor here in 2014: an old farmhouse in a village of 27 inhabitants not far from the Baltic Sea. Financed through crowdfunding and continuously expanded with the help of many hands, the Kunterbunthof is today a vibrant place of encounters, culture, and shared stories. No wonder it has already been voted one of the "10 most beautiful places to get away from it all in Europe" and the "Most popular holiday farm in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania".

There's always something to discover on the grounds. For example, the largest trebuchet in Northern Europe – a large, impressive wooden catapult, displayed there as both an art installation and a fun attraction. Next to it are two Breton yurts with glass domes, through which the starry sky twinkles at night, ready for overnight stays. One of these was a gift to the farm from an enthusiastic guest – along with a promise to return again and again for the next ten years. In the orchard, the blue yurt invites you to experience true nomadic moments. A rustic tiny house stands beneath an old walnut tree; there are also pitches for campers and a cozy, bright holiday apartment in the farmhouse.

The Kunterbunthof is a place to breathe deeply and recharge: Here, you can write books, work on creative projects, enjoy Spanish wines around a campfire, or simply unwind. Perhaps the secret of this farm is that it satisfies wanderlust without requiring far travel – because here, the world comes to visit. And for those who do get a serious case of wanderlust, globetrotter André is a host who is happy to share his best travel stories and insider tips.

Sustainable

Architecture

Demolishing and rebuilding would have been easier, but for true adventurers, building a nest should also be an experience. So, with the help of crowdfunding, ingenuity, and the muscle power of many friends, acquaintances, and guests, the old farm buildings were carefully stripped of their rotten timbers and rebuilt using new materials that were as true to the original as possible. A quaint tiny house stands beneath the walnut tree. And there are two Breton yurts made entirely of wood, linen, canvas and organic sheep's wool for insulation, held together without a single nail.

Food

The guest accommodations at Kunterbunthof are generally self-catering. All accommodations have kitchens, and the tiny house also has an outdoor kitchen in the garden. The highlight of the farm is an old barn that André has converted into a garden and jazz café. Here you can celebrate, dance, chat, get together for game nights, and of course, enjoy Spanish wines.

Environment

Gradually, the Kunterbunthof is to be expanded to achieve a reasonable ecological balance. At present, the small accommodations are heated with wood-burning stoves and wood from the farm's own forest. André spent more than 20 years travelling the world as an adventurer and photojournalist. With a rucksack and a bicycle. André recounts his travel adventures, foreign cultures and distant landscapes by candlelight and red wine, live and on a big screen. He regularly tours Germany with five elaborately produced film and photo shows. He also brings his experiences of slow and mindful travel to the farm, and with a bit of luck you may meet him around the campfire.

Well-Being

Sometimes friends André has met on his travels around the world visit the Kunterbunthof farm and stay for a shorter or longer period. These include massage therapists, artists, yoga masters, and other people with therapeutic skills. When someone like this is at the farm, there are treatments or workshops. When not, nature is there: meadows and forest, absolute silence, pure air – and long paths for restorative walks.
