Casa Sabir is a stylish apartment in Syracuse, close to the vibrant historic market on the island of Ortigia. Fresh fish and vegetables are available there. Both the view through the window and the view from both balconies offer guests a breathtaking sea view. And at the same time you can experience the lively atmosphere of the market. The bright colors and the Mediterranean light are the perfect mix for a holiday.
The hosts Luca and Iolanda bought the apartment in 2017 when they fell in love with the unique atmosphere of the island. The light-flooded apartment includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a spacious living area. During the renovation, the apartment was lovingly restored and has retained its old charm. Since 2018, guests have been able to enjoy the unique atmosphere: designer lamps, handmade furniture and contemporary art skilfully round off the ambience of the room.
The apartment was named "Sabir", which is described as an ancient language (lingua franca) made up of Arabic, Sicilian, Turkish, Genoese, Catalan and Venetian words. It was spoken from the Middle Ages to the 19th century at the ports and markets in the Mediterranean to connect the people living and working there. This is exactly what Casa Sabir is supposed to do today: a welcoming place has been created where people from different cultures can stay and experience authentic Sicily with all their senses.

ArchitectureThe renovation was carried out in collaboration with local craftsmen and all materials used were designed to preserve the original architectural features. The most striking feature in the interiors are the original wall decorations from 1900, which were discovered by chance under the recent white plaster. They were deliberately preserved as they aptly describe the traces of time and also match the color scheme of the place (pink and gray). The hosts describe the renovation as "a process of subtraction", like a sculpture, where certain parts of the material are removed to reveal the soul of the work. The master bedroom has two corner balconies and features an ornate vaulted ceiling, original cement tiles, a freestanding locally handcrafted stone sink and a king-size bed with sea views. The second bedroom is furnished with handcrafted bedside tables and a wardrobe with carved doors that recreate the design of the ecological cement floor tiles. The antique bedspreads come from the Sunday market in Modica. The kitchen, the heart of the house, is characterized by elegant lighting and a functional steel island that invites you to cook for yourself. The house's old laundry room has been converted into a picturesque wine cellar with hand-crafted iron shelves and an antique Sicilian majolica floor. The bathrooms feature family-owned crystal chandeliers and shower screens created by printing the hosts' grandmother's doilies on the microcement coating. The walls display the hosts' artwork inspired by the myths and ways of the Mediterranean.
FoodGuests at Casa Sabir cater for themselves. They have a well-equipped kitchen with a stove, electric oven, cooking and dining utensils, and a coffee machine at their disposal. Guests receive a basket of fresh fruit from the market and local sweets as a welcome gift from the hosts. They are very keen to ensure that guests also have the best culinary tastes. For this reason, they organize cooking courses with a chef. When booking, the chef goes to the market with the guests to buy fresh, local ingredients, which they then prepare together. Regional delicacies are of course prepared - fish is the basis for many delicious recipes. Of course, the guests' preferences and tolerances are taken into account when choosing the dish. The hosts recommend tuna, which is prepared with the famous Giarratana onion, small Ciliegini tomatoes, and Frigintini's organic olive oil. The chef interprets each dish in a new way and with a personal touch. Of course, guests can also explore the surrounding restaurants, the market, and the organic food stores. There is a private wine storage room with organic wines on site.
EnvironmentSustainability plays a key role in all of the hosts' projects, as their aim is to create a healthy environment and promote the use of natural patterns, local, sustainable materials and ecological techniques. The use of harmful substances is avoided. It is also about incorporating local handicrafts so that the environment of the apartment can be reflected in it. The following are therefore used: natural colors, LED lighting, water flow limiters, separate waste collection, an Ecolabel refill soap and shampoo (to avoid plastic waste), ecological cleaning and disinfection products. The employees and guests are sensitized to the issue of environmental protection. On arrival, guests receive information that includes suggestions for a stay that is as environmentally friendly as possible.
