Elbeglück

Mödlich, Brandenburg, Germany

The Elbeglück is a guest house on the Elbe dike with two detached holiday homes and four apartments in the main building. The rooms are all designed in one piece, but differ in their view. Depending on the orientation, the guests see a stork's nest, directly above the dike and the Elbe meadows, or the first rays of sunshine in the east-facing rooms.

The courtyard is a typical Brandenburg courtyard, which is located directly on the Elbe Cycle Path, and which also has its own garden restaurant. Max the cat and Ella the dog live there, as well as chickens, a dwarf rabbit and three sheep. In the courtyard with the cozy garden there are apple and cherry trees, barn swallows can be heard and the nightingale late at night, bats fl y over the courtyard in the evening and the croaking of frogs on the distant Elbe meadows can be heard. With the new moon and full moon, night walks are particularly good to admire nature in the moonlight and the starry sky.

The accommodation is run by Frîa Hagen and Volker Warning, who both have a background in photography and who became hosts through their passion for nature. It is important to them that old houses are preserved in their character and charm and that they are renovated in a way that is suitable for historical monuments. The main house was built around the turn of the century and the garden bar is located where there was once a thatched barn.

In 2017 they took over the guesthouse and lovingly renovated it and skillfully incorporated their favorite material wood in many places. The result is stylish rooms with natural lime colors, old plank floors from the Black Forest and pieces of furniture from earlier times, which together create a cozy atmosphere. It is important to Frîa and Volker that their guests spend an unforgettable time at Elbeglück and, in the truest sense of the word, take a feeling of happiness home with them. The many guests who keep coming back prove that they succeed.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe renovation of the house took place in a gentle way and in cooperation with a construction company. The building fabric was sheathed with new wood and a carpentry shop made new wooden windows for it. The interior design deliberately does without plastic and instead uses metal, glass and porcelain in addition to wood. The rooms are adorned with old furniture that has been given a piece of new life. The appreciation is reflected in the preparation of old tables, chairs and chests of drawers.

FoodFor Frîa, it is particularly important that the various dishes contain several vegetable components. She pays attention to short transport routes by using food from the region, such as fresh bread from a local baker or meat from a neighboring huntress. The breakfast menu deliberately does not include a buffet in order to avoid leftovers - instead, Frîa caters to the individual wishes of the guests and serves homemade jams and elderflower jelly. Frîa recently got a helping hand in the kitchen, although it is still important to her that every dish “goes over her spoon”. The guests can look forward to tasty dishes in the garden restaurant, without ready-made products and flavor enhancers; such as the vegetable sauce with sheep's cheese or wild boar sausage with homemade potato salad. In the afternoon, freshly baked cakes and pies are served with coffee. Frîa has dealt privately with intolerances and allergies, which is why she can conjure up vegan dishes in no time at all or cook gluten-free pasta with already prepared sauces. Since the basis of all dishes is vegan and only cooked here and there with dairy products or served with meat, vegans in Elbeglück get their full taste. Guests can cook for themselves in the apartment' kitchens and are happy to receive tips on trying out restaurants in the region.

The employees live in the region around the accommodation and have been working in Elbeglück for several years. The cook and the caretaker also come from the area. It is important for Frîa and Volker to have an appreciative relationship with the employees and to live this on a daily basis, to respond to their needs and to offer flexible working models. For this reason, employees can also eat and purchase drinks on site free of charge. In the summer of 2021, Frîa will start another project, the “Eisvogel”, a place for good gastronomy and cultural events where, for example, seminars, readings and concerts will take place. She has renovated an old marina for this purpose and is already looking forward to the first encounters there, to which the guests are cordially invited. In addition, Frîa is involved with the Elbe craftsmen, a cooperative for work, life and change with people who feel a need for peace, nature and slowing down.

EnvironmentIt goes without saying that rubbish is separated according to the standard and that the leftovers are fed to the chickens. The cleaning products are environmentally friendly and home remedies such as citric acid and vinegar are often used. The accommodation draws on green electricity and in principle pays attention to the careful use of resources. A solar concept is currently being worked on in order to generate electricity via panels in the future. The guesthouse is a partner of the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve and the hosts are happy to communicate sustainability issues with their guests.
