Das Hilla

Kassel, Hesse, Germany

The Hilla is a modern forest villa in Kassel, which has been opening its doors to guests since summer 2020. Surrounded by forest, orchard meadows and the extensive garden with terraces, guests can relax in the midst of nature and leave everyday life behind.

The house dates from 1913 and served as an inn for walkers. Later teachers from a neighboring high school lived there. The house has been in private hands since 1980 and was acquired by the current owners, the Janetzky-Aehlen family, in 2017.

On a total of four floors there are eleven individually designed bedrooms and seven newly renovated bathrooms. There is also a light-flooded dining room and a living room with a fireplace for cozy hours. The house is the perfect place for seminars and retreats, where people are supported to develop and to find peace. If guests want to work during their stay, there are several individual tables in the writing room. On the lower floor there is also a built-in, spacious kitchen that is perfect for cooking for large groups.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Hilla is a listed building with half-timbered buildings. Natural materials, such as the plaster, oils for the floors and ecological insulation, were preferred for the renovation. Old furniture was repainted and modernized, and old colors were deliberately used. A few Kassel companies were commissioned for the renovation.

FoodSlow food is served, where the food is grown organically and organically. Most of the fruit and herbs currently come from the garden. A “carefree package” is offered, consisting of a delicious breakfast, a balanced meal at lunchtime and a delicious soup with bread in the evening. The fridge is also filled with fresh fruit and various snacks. A separate farmland is to follow in order to be able to grow vegetables in the future. The food waste is recycled as much as possible, for example vegetable residues are boiled down as broth. There are vegetarian dishes and intolerance is also taken care of.

EnvironmentIt is mainly heated with firewood, the cleaning agents are biodegradable, just like soaps and shampoos. Since the house is in the middle of the forest, great importance is attached to living in harmony with nature: fallen fruits are allowed to eat stray animals, plants are a source of nutrition for insects and trees are only treated by experts.
