Chateau Plagne

Bétaille, Midi-Pyrénées, France

The Château Plagne is located in the south-west of France, in the Dordogne valley, which was designated a biosphere reserve by Unesco in 2012. A retreat consisting of 5 cottages and 2 guest rooms in the main house. This dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and was formerly a large winery.

Martina and Achim Schriever bought the property in 1998 after 30 years of being uninhabited and began renovating it. Since 2007 the house has been used as a guest house and the hosts understand it as their job to make their guests feel like they have arrived at friends and the focus is on relaxation and enjoyment.

The Château Plagne also offers a variety of creative and sporting workshops. The offer includes drawing, painting, photography, sculpting, music, yoga, oenology and always combines activity with table delights. It doesn't take much to relax and decelerate: The calm, the good air, a walk or a good book at one of the two salt water pools, you quickly escaped the hectic world and live in the here and now.

A new project is pending in 2020: vegetable cultivation in our own beautiful permaculture garden, natural and organic. This means that guests in the holiday homes can supply their own kitchen with vegetables and herbs and in the Château kitchen, guests benefit from the fresh ingredients that are prepared there.

Sustainable

ArchitectureDuring the renovation, great value was placed on ecological, natural materials, especially local types of wood and natural insulation materials such as wood wool. All construction work was done in-house and with the help of friends and local artisans. In addition, there are still new construction projects after the holiday season.

FoodDuring the course week there is a full culinary supply with a rich breakfast, a lunch snack and in the evening a nice menu or a buffet with selected organic wines. Outside of the courses there is an offer to enjoy the breakfast buffet every day and the menu or buffet 2-3 times a week. The kitchen also responds to vegetrarian or vegan wishes and pays particular attention to seasonal and regional products.

Mutual help and support are the foundation of the work at Château Plagne. Many of the seasonal employees have worked for Schrievers for many years and are supported, for example, in taking out health insurance. In addition, the local project “Vent de Vie” (Wind of Life) is supported, which organizes various events such as cabarets, for example to donate the proceeds to an autistic school or for the training of refugee families.

EnvironmentThe environment is a central issue in every activity: central heating and hot water are fed via a wood gasification stove, wood comes from our own forest, the pigeon tower is equipped with solar panels. Separating waste is also discussed with the guests and plastic bottles have been abolished. Responsible water consumption is also communicated and tap water for drinking is elaborately filtered for guests.

Well-BeingThe guests greatly appreciate the numerous courses on various topics: from creative workshops such as sculpture or acrylic painting to wine seminars. The multi-day workshops are offered by German-speaking course leaders. In addition to swimming in the two salt water pools, there is a wellness offer such as shiatsu, yoga or aromatherapy massages.
