Casa Pulpo

Raposeira, Algarve, Portugal

Casa Pulpo by sweet tides is located in the heart of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park on the wild southwest coast of Portugal, surrounded by wide landscapes, gentle hills and open fields where cows and goats occasionally graze.

Some rooms offer morning views of the surrounding countryside: expansive farmland, small herds of animals grazing in the distance, and wind turbines quietly contributing to the energy supply. Other parts of the house overlook the garden, where young fruit trees are in bloom. Just a 15-minute walk away lies the small village of Raposeira with its white houses, narrow streets, and red roofs – a typical Portuguese village that has retained its original character while attracting a diverse, international community. The area uniquely combines tranquility and unspoiled nature with proximity to some of Europe's best surf spots, reachable in just ten minutes.

The house itself is around 30 to 40 years old and underwent extensive renovations in the early 2020s. Since the beginning of 2026, it has been rented out by Sweet Tides as a small, personally managed project. The aim from the outset was to create a place where guests feel at home – uncomplicated, comfortable, and without unnecessary embellishment. A house that invites you to linger, is designed for extended stays, and consciously promotes slow travel. Many of the natural materials and furnishings in the accommodation come from a Scottish family who also placed great value on wood and a warm, simple design. This foundation has been carefully developed and complemented with nature photography and local influences. Bright living spaces, an open-plan kitchen, and a cozy living area with a fireplace create a particularly warm atmosphere in winter.

Outside, the garden and pool area invite you to enjoy quiet moments, while the location within Western Europe's largest protected coastal area offers countless opportunities for nature experiences – from hikes on the Fisherman's Trail to the unspoiled beaches of the region around Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente.

Sustainable

Architecture

Casa Pulpo is a classic Algarve farmhouse with just one story, white exterior walls, and a traditional red tile roof. During the renovation, the building was fitted with thick external insulation, keeping it pleasantly cool in summer and providing consistent warmth in winter. Large French windows bring in plenty of natural light, reduce energy consumption, and create a seamless transition to the garden. Even when the house was acquired, important energy-efficient features such as underfloor heating and a solar thermal system were already in place – a rather rare feature for a rural house of this type, and one upon which further improvements were made. Today, the system is complemented by photovoltaics, battery storage, and a planned PV charging station. Sustainability is also a conscious consideration in the furnishings and fittings: furniture is sourced secondhand wherever possible or obtained through regional platforms like OLX. Textiles and bed linens come from a Portuguese manufacturer that uses organic cotton. Increasingly, ceramics from the local pottery in Raposeira are also being incorporated.

Casa Pulpo is personally managed by Julius and Fritz, the founders of SWEET TIDES, both originally from Germany. As a small, independent project, the house works closely with local service providers for cleaning, maintenance, and activities – with a clear focus on people from the Raposeira and Vila do Bispo region. As the project develops, new local partnerships are continuously being established, and the involvement of the local community is consciously strengthened. A lovely example of this is the small welcome gift for guests: goat cheese from Roberto, a friendly producer with a farm just 15 minutes away. Beyond this, the local economy is actively supported. Guests are specifically directed to the pottery workshop in Raposeira, as well as markets and producers in Sagres and Vila do Bispo. This creates a direct connection to the region and a conscious contribution to preserving local structures and giving small businesses visibility in a tourism-driven environment.

Environment

The house's energy supply is based on a well-thought-out, sustainable concept. Hot water is generated via a solar thermal system, while underfloor heating at a low temperature provides consistent and efficient warmth during the winter months. The system is currently being expanded with a photovoltaic system and battery storage, which will cover a large portion of the energy needs in the future. A PV charging station for electric vehicles is also planned. Conscious energy use is an integral part of the stay. Guests are actively encouraged to use lights and electrical appliances only when necessary – an approach that is clearly and openly communicated in the house guide and is part of the shared understanding on site.

Well-Being

The 70 m² co-working annex, located directly next to the main house, expands Casa Pulpo with a flexible space for various uses. It can be set up for workshops, yoga, breathwork, or movement sessions, and seamlessly extends outdoors to the terrace and garden if needed. The space is suitable for both individual and group formats, from small retreats to professional workshops. Upon request, we can assist guests in connecting with local instructors and facilitators to complement the on-site offerings.
