Casa M stands on the edge of the small Sardinian village of Siddi and is an old stone house with its own unique character. The original farmhouse is around 400 years old, having been repeatedly altered and adapted to the life of a large family over the centuries.
After more than 20 years of the house standing partially empty, Matteo and Michele have brought it back to life. The two spent 17 years traveling in Europe and Asia and living in London before returning to Sardinia, where they sought a place where they could combine community with their thirst for new experiences.
Today, Casa M is a guesthouse with a very distinctive mix of furnishings: antiques, vintage furniture, books, and found objects from various cultures meet Sardinian elements, complemented by art by Michele and works by fellow artists. Each room has its own unique character. Downstairs, the Emily Suite opens onto a walled courtyard, typical of the traditional farmhouses in this region. From the upstairs rooms, the view extends across the green hills and the two plateaus surrounding Siddi.
Despite its spacious rooms, Casa M feels more intimate than large. There's a library, a breakfast room, a sunny veranda, and a garden. The thick stone walls keep the heat out, making the house a pleasant spot for an early breakfast, especially in spring. Much of what makes life here special takes place outside the house anyway: in the café, the village square, on a walk, or practicing yoga at sunset on the plateau. And for those who do want to go to the sea, some of the hosts' favorite beaches are about an hour away.

The primary goal in restoring Casa M was to preserve the house and its history as much as possible. The original structure, which underwent numerous changes from the 17th century to the last, was largely retained. Some elements, including the gates and the veranda, are listed as historical monuments. Dealing with the patterned 20th-century tiles proved particularly challenging: they were carefully removed piece by piece and later reinstalled in the restored rooms. The origin and environmental sustainability of the new materials were also carefully considered. For the wooden elements, reclaimed juniper wood and sustainably sourced chestnut wood were used. The walls feature alternating layers of clay plaster and Sardinian lime plaster, which, without unnecessary additives, contribute to a pleasant indoor climate. Where possible, reclaimed or locally sourced stone was used for thresholds and shelves.
Sardinia is known for its grains, and Siddi also has its own traditional pasta varieties, prepared in the village for generations. Visitors can learn how to make them at Casa M or sample them in one of the local restaurants. Another culinary highlight of Casa M is the fermented beverages that Matteo and Michele produce themselves. Kombucha and soda are made with herbs from their own garden, bringing a piece of their culinary experience from Eastern Europe to Sardinia.
Casa M also has close ties to the village. Siddi is home to one of Sardinia's CEAS centers, which focus on protecting native flora and fauna and promoting environmental education. Casa M occasionally hosts participants in such events and is itself involved in activities organized by local associations and cooperatives. When guests book a pasta or sweets workshop, Matteo and Michele invite villagers who still practice their crafts to lead the course in the house's kitchen. This fosters direct interaction with the people of Siddi and their local traditions. The small Casa M team is also set to expand once two more suites are completed.
In the garden, alongside the established plants, only Mediterranean species thrive, requiring little water and tolerating extended periods of drought. Compost is made on-site for the potted plants, and waste is separated for recycling. Bed linens are changed only upon request or for longer stays, cleaning is done with biodegradable products, and even the toiletries in the bathroom are environmentally friendly. Energy-efficient LED lights illuminate the entire house.
