Want to enjoy medieval charm? You can do so wonderfully at the Casa da Cisterna in Portugal.
In the family since 2004, this cozy house is a very special retreat. The hosts, Ana and António, both biologists, fell in love with the beauty and originality of this place when they were looking for accommodation in the picturesque fortress village of Castelo Rodrigo. First they bought a house for themselves before deciding to share their experience with others. Little by little, a boutique hotel was created from several houses, which today enchants its guests with its medieval flair.
The house's 14 rooms are individually decorated and convey a feeling of home. The style is cozy and combines a balanced mix of vintage and modern furniture. Each room is connected in its own way to the local nature and native bird species. The main house is flooded with light, spacious and comfortable, while the rooms are at the same time cozy and warm.
For the future, the two hosts envision sustainable growth, for small groups or individuals from different parts of the world who want to discover and explore the beauties of the region while being well accommodated and hosted.

ArchitectureThe houses were rebuilt using local materials such as stone and wood, with modern materials used for some elements. Most of the plants are native and require less irrigation, while heating is provided mainly by wood from local forestry. All materials were purchased locally and partly recycled.
FoodThe cuisine is characterised by seasonal, local and organic ingredients, with 50% reliance on local organic suppliers. Some food is even grown on the property, such as olives, olive oil and figs. Thanks to this careful selection and planning, little food waste is generated, but it is given to local farms. Traditional northern Portuguese cuisine serves as inspiration for all dishes prepared, which are exclusively homemade. As a special complement, a selection of local goat and sheep cheeses is offered, as well as exquisite Beira and Douro wines.
The employees at Casa da Cisterna all come from the region and receive permanent employment contracts and access to training programs. The hosts are also actively involved in a nature conservation project.
EnvironmentThe priorities are sustainable energy, recycling, waste separation and alternative cleaning products. There is also a partnership with the local NGO ATN Natureza to support the Faia Brava nature reserve.
Well-BeingMassages are available on request, as is an outdoor pool. In the future, the hosts also plan to offer yoga retreats.
