Biohotel Gitschberg

Meransen, South Tyrol, Italy

Blue skies, sunshine – that's what a holiday should be like! So let's head up, up to the charming, family-run Biohotel Gitschberg. Small, refined, and peaceful, it has stood for over 40 years amidst mountain meadows at an altitude of 1400 meters on the sunny Meransen plateau.

The younger generation has now taken over and transformed the hotel into a boutique organic hotel, renovated, remodeled, and managed according to the strictest environmental criteria. This return to the original way of life on the mountain, the connection with the surrounding alpine nature, and the hotel's own South Tyrolean roots is now reflected at every level: in the materials used in the building, the ingredients in the food, the hay and herbs in the spa.

With only 40 rooms, the Biohotel Gitschberg is an ideal place for summer hikers and nature lovers seeking tranquility, as well as snow-loving winter sports enthusiasts and wellness seekers. Nature greets guests from all sides through large windows, while the Dolomites gleam in the distance. A truly natural holiday and lifestyle experience unfolds here, characterized by a focus on the essentials and the luxury of simplicity. It offers ample opportunity for individuality, freedom, and refined, sustainable enjoyment.

And what's especially great: Although it's so remote and surrounded by nature, it's very easy to get there by public transport.

If you're interested, you can read on our blog about the Gitschberg's journey to becoming an organic hotel . You can find the hosts' favorite recipe in our "Kitchen Whispers" section, so you can try it at home.

Sustainable

Architecture

Modern and reimagined, yet still inspired by the rustic farmhouses and barns of the Gitschberg Jochtal alpine region, the hotel has been completely renovated and remodeled in recent years. Working in collaboration with local craftsmen and using traditional and environmentally friendly materials, the building has been optimized for energy efficiency. It now meets the stringent KlimaHaus standards and was the first existing hotel in South Tyrol to be certified as a KlimaHotel®.

Food

On Tuesdays, Hotel Gitschberg offers "100% South Tyrol". This means that the selection of food and drinks from breakfast to dinner is slightly reduced. For example, at breakfast, you'll find South Tyrolean grape and apple juice instead of the classic orange juice (because, after all, oranges don't grow in South Tyrol). But it also means actively practicing sustainability. Besides, it's fun, and it's still delicious—or perhaps even more so! On the other days, many of the ingredients are also regional, seasonal, and organic, as they come from farmers, traditional small-scale producers, or producers whom the Peintner family knows and supports personally. These include Slow Food products such as the local Geisler beef or the Villnösser Brillenschaf sheep, or simply wild-foraged forest and meadow herbs. Vegetarian options are available every day.

The majority of Gitschberg's employees come from the immediate vicinity, and the hotel strives to foster a positive work environment through various initiatives: attractive working hours for team members with children, opportunities for further training and career advancement, team building, and, last but not least, relaxation, leisure, and wellness options outside of working hours. For work clothes and various everyday items in the hotel, such as bread baskets, Gitschberg commissions the specialized sewing workshop "Vergissmeinnicht" (Forget-Me-Not) in Bruneck. This inclusive project for young people with disabilities produces unique and beautiful garments. Sales in the hotel shop also support this social project. Plants and herbs are purchased from a social cooperative. And with their organic fair trade coffee, where the origin of the beans can be traced back to the small-scale farmer, Horst and Barbara Peintner make further valuable social contributions.

Environment

Here on the magnificent Meransen plateau, it's not just the panoramic views and stunning natural scenery that impress. The sun shines almost every day with seemingly endless power. A solar system heats the entire swimming pool water and some of the domestic water. The hotel also generates its own green electricity. The building's technology is optimally designed for energy efficiency. All rainwater is collected and used for irrigation. And no new trees are felled for toilet paper, napkins, or the hotel's printed materials. Waste is strictly separated throughout the building and in the guest rooms. This is one of the reasons why Hotel Gitschberg has been KlimaHotel® certified since 2013. This seal of approval confirms the ideal energy efficiency of the building envelope and the entire building. The environmental compatibility of the building materials used, as well as the hotel's management of water and soil resources, are also assessed. Furthermore, the certification covers waste prevention and disposal, environmentally friendly transportation for staff and guests, and the active promotion of regional traditions and resources in daily use. Furthermore, for the seal, expenditures are monitored to ensure that only investments with the most sustainable and long-lasting impact are made.

Well-Being

The Fenilia Spa at Hotel Gitschberg – as its name suggests – is entirely dedicated to hay, forest herbs, and meadow herbs. Accordingly, guests can enjoy a relaxing sweat in the hay sauna, steam room, infrared sauna, or Finnish panoramic sauna in the garden. In the indoor and outdoor panoramic mountain pool, you can swim in sun-warmed mountain spring water with a direct view of the Dolomites. And during the summer months, the relaxation room, filled with the scent of Swiss pine, extends into the panoramic fragrance garden – an open-air living room and sanctuary amidst old fruit trees, flowers, and herbs. Unobstructed mountain views are included. The hay lounge, unlike anything else available, promises unparalleled deep relaxation. The naturopathically inspired treatment program includes massages and rituals with alpine herbs, healing stones, and soothing sounds. And beyond the spa area, nature itself awaits, offering the power of the forest and the soothing presence of trees. Host Barbara Peintner accompanies interested guests to the alpine forest bathing area. This brings people a very special kind of peace and provides lasting energy.

Testimonials
