In the Casas Rurales des Refugio Marnes you will find the absolute absence of noise, apart from the chirping of birds and the rustling of the wind through the pine trees. Particularly eye-catching is the terraced landscape, which also extends over the property, which was built almost 3,000 years ago in order to be able to farm in the area around Alicante.
The hosts, Richard Steenblik and Willem Pieffers, bought the Refugio at the end of 2002 and immediately started restoring and renovating the abandoned property. Just three months after the purchase, they were able to rent out their first accommodation. Since then, two more houses, a glamping tent and six B&B rooms have been added. The two hosts run this beautiful place with great joy and love for their job. Their intention was to create an inviting destination for people who love Spain, nature, silence and conscious travel. Their goal is to continuously expand their ideals of sustainability in order to become the greenest holiday destination in Spain. All houses are already almost exclusively operated with solar power. The goal is to be climate neutral by 2025.
The furnishing and restoration is in eco-chic style, with materials such as natural stone, steel, glass, terracotta, but also concrete being used. Much of the furniture is second-hand and is combined with the antique and the modern. Every house and every room is uniquely designed, but recognizable in the style of Refugio Marnes.

ArchitectureDuring the restoration and renovation, as little as possible was interfered with in the existing building. The swimming pool has been designed to blend in as well as possible with the natural surroundings. The garden is planted with typical Mediterranean plants and trees. 95% of all materials and furnishings used were bought in the immediate vicinity and thus contribute to the local economy.
FoodGuests are served a delicious breakfast with seasonal and fresh products from the region, which can be taken in the shared living / dining area or privately on the terrace in front of the rooms. Dinner is also offered twice a week.
EnvironmentRefugio Marnes is already powered almost entirely by solar electricity. The hosts' plan is that the kilometers they travel personally and for the project by 2025 will be covered by solar-powered cars or other CO2-neutral means of transport. As much rainwater as possible will be collected in underground water tanks. Much of the wastewater will be recycled and used to irrigate trees and plants. All waste is separated.
Well-BeingGuided hiking weeks are offered twice a year. In addition, yoga or breathing courses are organized with partners on a regular basis. Bikes can be rented on-site.
