Am Wildbachberg

Deutschlandsberg, Styria, Austria

Am Wildbachberg is an accommodation that enchants with a breathtaking view of the picturesque Schilcherland in western Styria. Here, surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, mixed forests and vineyards, guests experience the perfect mix of nature and relaxation.

At Wildbachberg, the region's tradition is lived in a family environment. Günter and Johanna Krainer are behind this special accommodation with heart, hand and head, while their son Matthias actively supports the garden design. Günter likes to give his guests an insight into the world of natural wines over a glass of wine in the 300-year-old wine cellar or talks passionately about his second great hobby: fly fishing. Johanna, on the other hand, impresses with her home-baked bread at the breakfast table and with the artistic objects she creates as a glass artist.

The refuge consists of three unique holiday homes or chalets, which can also be booked as an ensemble - Sepp, Franzl and Rosa. The house from which the Franzl holiday home was created was first mentioned in documents in 1722, and the outbuilding next to it is of a similar age. In addition, a 250-year-old "Troadkastn" (granary) from another part of Styria was lovingly and authentically restored and moved here. This ultimately became Haus Sepp.

Each of the three houses is lovingly and individually designed, rustic with modern accents such as pictures and glass art objects. While House Franzl has a generous two floors, House Rosa and Sepp are smaller, but particularly compact and cozy. All houses are flooded with light and have their own large terrace.

Sustainable

ArchitectureAm Wildbachberg is a successful example of upcycling, in which old buildings have been lovingly revitalized in the style of the region. Accommodations have been created here that impress with traditional craftsmanship and natural materials. Real wood windows, old bricks and lime plaster give the houses their unique charm. Each element tells a story: the old armchairs in the wine cellar come from Eastern Styria, the rustic ornaments on the outside wall now also adorn the snack boards. The table in the wine cellar was a birthday present for Johanna 30 years ago and the curtains were sewn from old linen by the host's 74-year-old mother. The old armchairs in the wine cellar come from Eastern Styria, and the curtains were sewn from old linen by the host's 74-year-old mother. All of the craftsmen and businesses come from the region and are very friendly with the hosts. The paving stones and wall stones come from a quarry "a stone's throw away" and are typical of the region. The wood comes from the owner's own forest. The old beaver tails come from a demolished house in the immediate vicinity of the Wildbachberg. The metalwork, the staircase, the terraces, the floors, the pictures and even the glass art came from the builders themselves.

FoodThe ingredients for breakfast come 100% from regional suppliers (eggs from organic farms), and a lot of things are also homemade (bread, jams, sausages). Most of the products are also organically grown. Catering is done in collaboration with nearby wine taverns. Another highlight at Wildbachberg is the wine cellar filled with around 800 bottles of natural wine.

The accommodation only employs staff from the neighborhood, who can use all the facilities free of charge.

EnvironmentWaste separation and sustainable cleaning products are a matter of course, while the water comes from the regional water cooperative. There are also organic cotton bed linen and natural cosmetics in the bathrooms. Host Günter Krainer has also started an energy initiative and founded the first energy cooperative in Styria, which aims to use regionally generated energy in the region. The electricity at Am Wildbachberg comes exclusively from this energy cooperative.
