Alte Schule Stegelitz

Stegelitz, Brandenburg, Germany

There used to be so much going on here in Stegelitz that the old school building from 1786 had to be expanded by two halls at the beginning of the 20th century so that all students could find space.

What it looks like now in the country in the new federal states is known: economically structurally weak and only sparsely populated. But what some define as need, others make a virtue of. Such as Mona and Andreas. They bought the old school building ensemble, set up home away from the big cities and do not complain that so little is offered here, but support the reconstruction of social vitality in the region with their own commitment.

In the guest house built in 2005 and the lovingly designed garden, they offer travelers and groups the opportunity to spend their holidays in this spacious, natural area in the middle of the Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve and to enjoy the originality of nature and the buildings of the area. Starting with the architecturally beautiful school building itself and the neighboring old village church made of field building blocks, for the maintenance and care of which the two Neu-Stegelitz founders of a support association.

And with the increased influx of people like Mona and Andreas, creative movement is slowly coming back to the region.

ArchitectureCenturies of regional architectural styles can be traced in the Pension Alte Schule Stegelitz. The neighboring old church from 1297, for example, is typical of field stones found at that time and is architecturally quite unique in the region. The old school building from 1786, when the village had finally recovered from the long period after the Thirty Years' War, where it was uninhabited, is built with adobe and field stones and is also preserved. For the subsequent hall construction, the then emperor donated 5,000 marks to buy the 13 wagons full of bricks. And the newer guest house is built in a regional wooden frame construction with mud walls and hemp insulation. Then as now, all materials are from the immediate vicinity and the current owners work exclusively with regional craftsmen for renovation and expansion. As much as possible is recycled and reused. Wood and walls are protected and refined with ecological oils and colors.

FoodAs much as possible fresh, seasonal and regional (and those who have read carefully know that there is nothing but organic agriculture in the vicinity!). Avoid microwaves, finished ingredients, flavor enhancers and preservatives and as far as possible also packaging waste. Guests are sensitized to act in the self-catering kitchen according to these sustainable guidelines. Herbs from the school garden can also be used, depending on the offer. Vegetarian and vegan offers expressly possible.

Mona and Andreas make a difference in Stegelitz and the region. They have set up the "Friends of the Feldsteinkirche Stegelitz eV" project and are also supporting the local residential group of young people of solidarity. For the local brewery project "the bride" they produced the video for successful crowdfunding and thus financed it. (Understandable: Who doesn't like a creative and innovative brewery in the village!) They are also members of several associations that carry out regional projects with sustainability, culture and social issues. And not to be underestimated in this structurally weak region: in their pension they create jobs for people from the neighborhood who can also identify emotionally with the Old School project and who can help shape it themselves.

EnvironmentAs is usual in a school, there is a spirit of responsibility for current and future generations. And with it a claim to keep the living space worth living and healthy. With this in mind, sustainability is practiced in all areas. In terms of energy technology, the old school is now very well positioned with a solar photovoltaic system, a solar thermal system, a very efficient wood gasification stove and, in addition, a gas thermal bath. In addition, garbage is avoided wherever possible, almost everything that can still be used is used and everything else is either composted itself or entrusted to local waste disposal strictly separately. Travelers and guests are informed about waste prevention, the importance of the biosphere reserve and the world heritage site Buchenwald Grumsin as well as about regional activities of sustainable tourism such as "pleasure hiking"

Well-BeingThere is a sauna in the main house which can be used on request. For massages and nutritional advice or fasting cures, there are cooperation partners in the old school that can be booked.
