Apartment

Schloss Neuenhof

Lüdenscheid, Sauerland, Germany

The apartment is located in the outer bailey of Neuenhof Palace. The building with old walls is from 1780. The baroque moated castle itself was first mentioned in a document in 1326 and is an important architectural and cultural monument in the region around Lüdenscheid.

The hosts are the von dem Bussche couple, who and their two children took over the business from their parents in 2019. The family is already in the 20th generation on the farm and has been running sustainable forest management ever since. During the corona pandemic, when the focus was on regional holiday destinations, they decided to set up a holiday apartment in the castle. The young family would like to lead Neuenhof Castle into the future with zeitgeist - among other things, a diverse range of events, cultural dates and the charming courtyard ambience ensure this.

The bright 120 square meter apartment offers a unique view of the valley and the castle park, the castle courtyard, trees and a greenhouse. The apartment comprises two bedrooms, a living room and a dining room with an open kitchen. The stylish and Scandinavian pieces of furniture were carefully selected. An attempt was made to buy as much vintage furniture as possible that already had character. All that was new was a sofa, the kitchen and the bathroom. The floors are natural, the hallway is equipped with beautiful wall cassettes. A stove awaits you in the living room for cozy evenings.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe house is from 1780 and is made of regional Grauwacke stone. The roof structure is historic and largely in its original condition. It is made from local spruce wood. The floors of the apartment are made of natural spruce.

FoodThe apartment is designed for self-sufficiency. Guests can purchase regional products from the hosts' "Marktschwärmerei": their own vegetables, game meat, such as venison sausages or venison fillet, and honey.

The employees live in the region and have been permanently employed for many years. They are supplemented by mini-jobs that are paid well above the minimum wage. The employees are offered summer and Christmas parties and a personal and familiar atmosphere is maintained. The von dem Bussche family is involved in charity events for local institutions, such as the children's home, hospice or youth work.

EnvironmentThe heating system was converted from heating oil to wood pellets (from sustainable forestry) in 2015. Waste is separated according to the possibilities of the city of Lüdenscheid. The water is urban and is fed from the surrounding Versetalsperre. When furnishing the apartment, it was possible to dispense with new acquisitions for the most part. The host family practices forest management according to the standards of the natural forest management ANW and is PEFC certified. Otherwise, they promote the marketing of regional food through a “market craze” in the castle courtyard. In addition, they run their own bee colony, produce vegetables for the residents: inside, and eat game meat from their own forests, among other things.
