Natalia's Houses

Douliana, Crete, Greece

With a view of the breathtaking mountain range of the White Mountains, a garden full of fruit trees and flowers, olive groves and green hills, as well as a small valley with carob trees right in front of your eyes, you can spend a relaxing holiday in Crete in Natalia's Houses.

Guests have the unique opportunity to experience and participate in authentic Greek country life up close. In the middle of the rural idyll you can enjoy local cultural events and festivals and become part of the warm village community.

The property's four traditional stone houses have been around since 1999. The hosts Andreas, Vasso and daughter Natalia (after whom the property is named) officially opened the property's doors to their guests in 2001. Since the beginning, their vision has been to create something more than just a “place to stay.”

The houses exude a relaxed, homely atmosphere - warm, cozy and flooded with sunlight and the fresh air of the forest. The interior design of all houses is based on the Cretan tradition. With stone beds and sofas around the fireplaces, as well as wooden furniture. Most of the carpets and decorations were made by the women of the family and have been in their possession for many generations.

What particularly sets Natalia's Houses apart is that the hosts themselves live there and their guests become part of the extended family. Guests also have the opportunity to book private cooking classes in the rustic outdoor kitchen. The hosts are also happy to organize visits to beekeepers, olive oil farms and regional winemakers.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe houses are built of limestone, with wooden stairs, floors and ceilings made from local cypress. Almost everything was handmade by the family and especially by Andreas. All fern furniture is made in a nearby village in the old Cretan style (sofas, chairs, tables). The outdoor kitchen, gardens and pool area are built of stone. All materials used to build the houses are locally produced.

FoodThe hosts strive to preserve traditional and regional cuisine using locally sourced organic products, focusing on the quality of food, not quantity. Sustainability, seasonal fruit and fresh vegetables are the most important thing for them, and they also offer that to their guests. Almost 80 percent of the products are therefore organic. There is a small vegetable garden and almost everything guests try is home-grown. In the adjacent traditional shop, filled with local products, guests can enjoy authentic Greek delicacies. These include carob, our own organic olive oil, homemade syrups, traditional sweets, handmade cheese, aromatic honey, fragrant herbs and much more.

EnvironmentThere are solar panels that produce the hot water and some of the central heating for the houses. In addition, a sophisticated recycling and waste separation system is consistently implemented, as is the environmentally friendly disposal of food waste. In houses, economical lighting ensures that energy is used consciously. The hosts participate in several conservation projects in the region and specifically in their village (cleaning and free access to the area's water sources, protection of old and historic hiking trails, forest protection). They also always encourage guests to buy from local producers in the region and introduce them to seasonal fruit and vegetables. There are also recommendations for the responsible use of energy in all forms (sensible use of air conditioning, water, food waste, wood for the fireplace).
