hermann&mia

Gaienhofen, Lake Constance, Germany

Seeing Lake Constance from your bed or enjoying the view over the water from the freestanding bathtub – that's possible at hermann&mia.

The two identical houses, designed by architect Ingo Bucher-Beholz, combine Bauhaus clarity with a beach house atmosphere. Bright, light-filled rooms, an open-plan design, and minimalist furnishings allow guests to relax from the moment they arrive. Design classics meet well-loved, unique pieces like flea market finds, combined with sand-colored linen curtains, light-colored, comfortable sofas, and fine cotton bed linens.

The houses were completed in 2023 and have been rented out since 2024. High-quality screed flooring, a striking solid wood sliding door, handcrafted fitted kitchens, and premium materials create a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere and enhance everyday life. Those who appreciate open spaces, Scandinavian simplicity, and the unique light of Lake Constance will find a retreat here that is modern, comfortable, and inspiring.

And it's not just the interior that impresses, the location is also delightful: The houses are situated on a spacious corner plot on a hillside on the Höri peninsula, in a quiet, green neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle. The lake is a five-minute walk away, while the expansive grounds offer terraces, gardens, and open spaces for cooking, dining, and spending time together.

The Mia and Hermann Hesse House is located right next door (hence the name of the accommodation). The former home of the writer and his wife can be visited on guided tours, as can the Hesse Museum in Gaienhofen.

Sustainable

Architecture

The houses on Lake Constance are low-energy, timber-framed buildings constructed from local Black Forest wood and featuring eco-friendly insulation materials that create a pleasantly balanced indoor climate. Vintage furniture complements the modern interiors, and only local craftspeople from the region were employed for construction and furnishing.

Food

Lake Constance is known for its vegetable and fruit plantations, and numerous local producers are located around the houses, whose products are readily recommended to visitors. Small stalls along the hiking trails invite you to discover regional delicacies. The Höri-Bülle, an aromatic, almost sweet red onion, is particularly popular and is a protected EU specialty prized far beyond the region.

Environment

Recycling is a matter of course in everyday life, and many pieces of furniture and accessories are lovingly crafted from upcycled materials. The Höri peninsula between Radolfzell and Stein am Rhein is also known for its nature parks and hiking trails, as well as its gentle development for tourism. It consists largely of nature reserves and protected landscapes.

Well-Being

Relaxation and activity can be perfectly combined at Lake Constance: On the mezzanine of the accommodation, a freestanding bathtub with a view of the lake invites you to linger. For nature lovers, there are over 100 kilometers of signposted hiking trails, and the Lake Constance Cycle Path runs through Gaienhofen, offering cyclists 260 kilometers of picturesque routes along the lake. Water sports such as sailing, surfing, or stand-up paddleboarding are possible right on your doorstep, and those who want to enjoy some wellness in between will find nearby hotels with day spa passes.
