Flores do Vez

Sistelo, Norte, Portugal

Flores do Vez is located in the mountain village of Sistelo in northern Portugal, nestled in the Vez valley with its green slopes and the terraced fields typical of the region.

Depending on the season, the day here begins with mist drifting through the valley, with views of the old stone walls of the fields, or with the changing green of the surrounding mountains. Little more than birdsong and the murmur of the river below the village can be heard.

The two houses of Flores do Vez were originally abandoned granite houses that had stood empty for many years. Instead of building something new, the owners carefully restored the existing buildings and preserved their original structures. They were reopened as Flores do Vez in May 2026.

The design consciously incorporated materials that reflect the history of the place: natural stone, wood, linen, and calming colors characterize the rooms. Large windows offer views of the landscape, connecting the interior with its surroundings. The houses are simply furnished, with a keen eye for detail and an atmosphere that is more tranquil than decorative.

A major advantage of Flores do Vez is its location amidst nature. Many hiking trails begin right at the doorstep and lead through the terraced landscape of Sistelo, forests, and to viewpoints overlooking the Vez Valley. Therefore, a stay doesn't require much planning. Often, all you need to do is set off, explore the surroundings, and spend the day without a fixed schedule.

Sustainable

Architecture

Instead of competing with nature, the two houses consciously blend into their surroundings. They were carefully restored, preserving the existing building fabric. Granite, along with plenty of wood, forms the centerpiece of the interiors. Wherever possible, local craftspeople and regional suppliers were involved in the construction.

Food

Even without its own restaurant, good food plays an important role at Flores do Vez. Carefully selected Portuguese products are available for breakfast, allowing guests to start the day at their own pace. Furthermore, the hosts encourage guests to explore the traditional restaurants in Sistelo and the surrounding villages and experience the regional cuisine.

Flores do Vez is a small, family-run project deeply rooted in the region. The family collaborates with local people for cleaning and maintaining the grounds, placing great importance on supporting the local economy. At the same time, they aim to offer guests not only the accommodation itself, but also the opportunity to experience the village of Sistelo – with its winding paths, natural surroundings, and everyday life.

Environment

One decision the hosts are particularly proud of was their conscious decision to forgo a pool. While this might seem standard for many guests, it simply wasn't necessary here. After all, one of Portugal's most beautiful rivers flows just steps from the houses, offering a natural alternative for swimming.
