The beautiful view of the surrounding hilly landscape with olive and almond trees is one of the highlights of the Finca Colmina Mallorca property. The tree-shaded terrace and the spacious pool do the rest to ensure your well-being on site.
What makes the property, which consists of three houses, unique is that guests can experience and feel the true character of the island, completely isolated from the tourist attractions: the starry sky, the rural atmosphere with its unique charm, practically no traffic, but instead the twittering of birds, the chirping of crickets and the bleating of sheep.
The host family consists of the extended Bach family, the Bach couple, their six children and now six grandchildren. The whole family supported the renovation and actively pitched in. Host Wolfgang wanted to create a place for his family where they could go on holiday and, above all, spend time together. He discovered the property, which was built around 1900, by chance in 2006, fell in love with it and eventually bought it. The finca was gradually converted and expanded. It has been available for rent in its current structure since 2017.
The interior is modern and rather puristic. The combination of old and new reveals a clear line, even if the rooms are designed differently. Both kitchens are completely white and an outdoor kitchen allows for cozy evenings outside. Two modern fireplaces ensure a pleasant ambience even in the colder seasons.

ArchitectureDuring the renovation, every effort was made to preserve the character of the house and the grounds, as the previous owner, a Mallorcan farmer, had built them. In addition, particular emphasis was placed on sustainability. First, the old, large storage facility, which stood not far from the finca, was converted into a new small house, the Casa. Only building materials that are used in the interior of Mallorca were used. The floor slab and parts of the wall were retained. Since the property is in the middle of the island, the nearest neighbor is 500 meters away and the nearest town (Villafranca) is 2.5 kilometers away, the host family was self-sufficient in all areas from the start. Four years later, the former donkey stable was converted into a small apartment, the foundation and foundation walls were retained and a new roof was put on. This is how the Casita was created with a small bathroom and a wood pellet stove. The renovation of the old finca began in 2015. Here too, the aim was to preserve as much of the old building as possible and still remodel it so that the house can be heated in an energy-optimized way in cold, wet weather in winter and can manage without air conditioning in summer when it is very hot. The underfloor heating was installed throughout the house (ground floor and upper floor) and can be regulated decentrally in each individual room. It is operated exclusively by solar thermal energy. The facade is clad in a thermal insulation composite system and painted in a color that matches the rural surroundings with its plants and trees. The old roof structure was refurbished and converted into a carport and used as a substructure for the outdoor kitchen. Roof tiles that were still of good quality were used again and supplemented with new ones obtained from a Mallorcan roofer. A carpenter from Villafranca designed small side tables for the bedrooms from the large, old wooden entrance door. All of the craftsmanship was carried out by local companies from Villafranca, Porreres and other small towns in the surrounding area. The atmosphere in the three accommodations is different: the finca is open and flooded with light and includes spacious rooms with high ceilings, the casa is also bright and open; the casita is rather small and cozy and is heated by a pellet stove. Outside, the hosts have built benches from existing wood, set up straw umbrellas made in Mallorca, and built an outdoor kitchen with existing wood and old stones.
FoodThe accommodation is designed for self-catering, and guests have two indoor and one outdoor kitchens at their disposal. Guests can help themselves to the fruit from the garden: oranges, mandarins, lemons, pomegranates, figs, olives, almonds and rosemary. Host Wolfgang recommends freshly squeezed orange juice from the oranges in the garden. The shops in the small villages in the area and the weekly markets are recommended for grocery shopping. In the towns of Villafranca, Petra and Porreres there are small, cozy restaurants serving Mallorcan dishes and local wines.
Only employees from the region work at the Finca Colmina Mallorca, in addition to Wolfgang, who takes care of bookings and marketing. The finca employs a gardener, an administrator who has a small team around her who takes care of cleaning and laundry, and there is a company that takes care of maintenance. The host family maintains a close relationship with its employees and pays fair wages. When the accommodation is not rented out, the employees are allowed to organize barbecues and use the pool. They are also allowed to help themselves to fruit. The host couple also financially supports a project in Bolivia that cares for street children there.
EnvironmentGuests receive a small document explaining in a friendly and humorous way how to behave in a rural environment. It also points out that the accommodation with the three houses is completely self-sufficient, i.e. there is no public electricity, water supply or sewerage. Topics that are covered are saving water and electricity, correct waste disposal and respect for nature. There is no garbage collection in the finca, which means that guests have to dispose of their garbage themselves: either in one of the numerous garbage containers in the area or at the recycling center in Porreres. So that you don't always have to drive to the next village by car, guests have three mountain bikes at their disposal. All disposal (toilets, domestic water) takes place via two bio-plants, which use their chamber systems to ensure that the waste decomposes without having to empty anything or discharging it into nature. A private well provides the water supply; a deep well pump was installed and new pipes laid for this purpose. A large photovoltaic system on the property's own fields supplies the accommodation with electricity. Solar thermal energy is used to produce hot water for the bathrooms and the underfloor heating. Since Mallorca has an infinite number of hours of sunshine, the accommodation is almost 95% self-sufficient in terms of photovoltaics and solar thermal energy.
Well-BeingThe area is ideal for cycling, and there are three mountain bikes available free of charge at the property. There is also a cooperation with a bike rental company in Villafranca that offers e-bikes. There is a beautiful hiking trail right by the finca and the area is ideal for jogging. The 12x6 meter pool is perfect for swimming laps before breakfast.
