Picobello Lago, a guesthouse in Lombardy, Italy, combines modern design with a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The house, originally built in the 1960s and uninhabited for a long time, was renovated and redesigned in 2019 with great attention to detail. Spacious rooms, high-quality furniture and well-thought-out furnishings create an environment in which guests immediately feel at home. Lots of wood, individual accents and handmade lamps give the living units a special touch, while large windows ensure a bright, friendly atmosphere.
Four of the five units offer beautiful views of the mountains and the garden. In the ground floor apartment, guests have this view from the kitchen-living room, while the bedroom is on the other side. Various outdoor areas, including a terrace on the first floor and several retreats in the garden, allow guests to enjoy the surroundings in peace.
The service is personal and warm. Guests are greeted with a welcome drink and receive individual tips for excursions. There is a spacious common room where you can chat or relax. Those who want to get creative have the opportunity to take part in individually tailored design, painting or drawing activities.
Behind Picobello Lago are Kaja Thorwart, who emigrated from Germany over 20 years ago, and her husband, an architect. Together with Elena, who grew up in the region, she forms a team that offers guests not just a stay, but a real experience - in a house that was designed with a lot of heart and a sense of aesthetics.

ArchitectureThe house, which dates back to the 1960s, has been renovated in a modern style and yet still blends harmoniously into the existing residential area. Contemporary technology uses sustainable solar and air energy, while the renovation relied on regional craftsmanship. In addition to classic building materials, a lot of local wood was used, which gives the building a warm, natural look. In the garden area, traditional dry stone walls underline the authentic character of the property and combine modernity with regional construction.
A local cleaning assistant is employed, who can bring her two children (5 and 7 years old) with her if necessary. Another person from the region supports in all areas relating to guests and administration, which ensures close and personal support. Social commitment is an important part of the house. The adoption of a child from Colombia provides financial support to the "Ada Support Association", which looks after and cares for children adopted from Colombia. From this season, a social association in Mandello will also be added to make a contribution locally.
EnvironmentSolar panels and a heat pump ensure energy-efficient heating and cooling of the house. Coffee machines use ESE pads that are packaged in paper, while recycled toilet paper, kitchen rolls and napkins are used. Plastic is avoided as much as possible; instead, there are organic waste bags and strict waste separation, supported by an information sheet in each residential unit. Environmentally friendly cleaning products as well as organic tea and care products with an ecological component round off the concept. A glass water bottle and a carafe are available to welcome you - an invitation to enjoy the high-quality tap water and avoid plastic bottles. A shopping basket is provided to make sustainable shopping on site easier.
