Eco Suites Caves

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

The Eco Suites Caves are, as the name suggests, a modern cave house. There are no windows, but a glass door and a skylight provide natural light. In the morning, through the glass door, you can look out onto a magical garden with palm trees, bamboo and a cozy seating area under a large tree.

The majestic mountains of Tenerife rise in the background. The surroundings are enlivened by wild birds and turtle doves, while free-roaming chickens roam around.

The 8,000 m² property, of which 1,500 m² are available to guests, includes a beautiful outdoor pool and various orchards. The ecological philosophy is evident in every detail: the water is reused to irrigate the plants and the energy is generated on site. Thanks to the bioclimatic architecture, the average annual temperature in the cave is a pleasant 21°C - without any additional energy consumption.

The 60 m² cave house was dug out of tuff and offers all modern amenities for a comfortable stay. It is located on the edge of the Anaga Rural Park, a biosphere reserve. Here you can relax and look after the donkeys, take them for a walk, collect fresh eggs or stroll through the orchard and pick the seasonal fruit.

After 11 years of intensive work, the house was completed in 2016 by Ana Belén and Antonio, who now run it. It is a living project that is constantly evolving, inspired by sustainability, environmental awareness and the use of environmentally certified materials. The minimalist design, the noble materials such as oak and marble and the light colors in blue, turquoise, beige and white create a cozy and light-filled atmosphere that invites you to linger.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe architecture is based on the zero kilogram concept, the aggregates were extracted from the same intervention, the construction does not consume soil as it is underground, it is totally passive and does not waste energy to maintain the temperature between 21 and 23 degrees all year round. All materials are natural and sustainable - responsibly harvested wood, silicate paints, water-based varnishes free of emissions and volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde. The second-life furniture, terrace floors made of composite materials (bamboo sawdust and recycled plastic) are also free of volatile organic compounds.

FoodThe accommodation offers all seasonal fruits and vegetables that the hosts produce on their farm and that guests can pick up directly. Organic eggs are provided by free-range chickens and bread is from a local baker. All organic waste on site is composted.

On the same farm as the Eco Suites Caves is the address of the AMBAR association, a non-profit organization financed by the hosts and dedicated to the welfare of the donkeys. Educational and therapeutic intervention programs with donkeys are carried out, and animal welfare courses and walks accompanied by the animals are offered. The hosts also collaborate with several environmental associations.

EnvironmentCurrently, 100% of the energy consumed on the property is generated by an innovative hybrid solar-wind system. There is a double sewage disposal network and a water purification system. The purified water is used for irrigation, thus preserving natural resources. Garbage is selectively collected and composted, and low-consumption fixtures with ventilation and a pneumatic toilet that mixes air and water contribute to water savings with each flush. A double cistern with increased capacity collects rainwater, which is used to fill the chemical-free pool, which is purified by a salt electrolysis chlorinator. All amenities offered, from laundry soap to other hygiene items, are ecological, supporting the sustainable approach of the project.

Well-BeingIn the garden there is a chemical-free pool where you can swim and relax.
