The Richterhaus in Scherleinsöd near Untergriesbach is a listed holiday home built around 1670. It is located in the southern Bavarian Forest, on the edge of a small village, not far from Passau, in the tri-border region connecting Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. A place where past and present meet. A place to do nothing. Awarded the Lower Bavarian District Heritage Prize.
The house's history stretches far back: four generations of court clerks lived here. Then craftsmen, so-called smallholders. Thirty years uninhabited, no running water, a well in the garden. Inside the residential wing, the original room layout and building fabric have been preserved. The house impresses with its original character. The walls are made of gneiss and granite fieldstones, small windows, some with grilles. When entering through the low granite doorway – watch out! – duck your head. Irregular granite slabs in the hallway. A black plank ceiling in the parlor. The smokehouse kitchen has a barrel vault, with bricks and granite boulders blackened by the open fire.
In the former hayloft, a modern living room with a library and a view of the garden. The former carriage house now contains a sunny garden room with vintage furniture and a small pavilion – both also perfect for relaxing after a sauna. This pavilion isn't quite outdoors and not quite indoors, providing a place to unwind when it's too hot, too wet, too cold, too windy, or the sun is too bright in the garden or on the terrace.
Around the Richterhaus, you'll find Lake Rannasee, the Schlögen Bend, and of course Passau with its museums, theaters, cabaret, and Bavarian cuisine. Cyclists will also find plenty to enjoy: whether e-bike, mountain bike, gravel bike, or road bike – between the Danube and the Vltava rivers, in South Bohemia in the Czech Republic and the Mühlviertel region in Austria, there are countless tours, from leisurely to challenging. And hiking is a must everywhere, whether it's up and down the Dreisessel or Lusen mountains along the Danube, or a more relaxed stroll along high-altitude trails.

Sustainable
Sustainability here is not an add-on, but a guiding principle – from the building's structure to the daily lives of its guests. The Richterhaus is a brick building, dendrochronologically dated to around 1670, making it one of the rare early modern residential buildings in Lower Bavaria. During the restoration, great emphasis was placed on preserving the historical fabric and continuing to work with natural materials. Floors, ceilings, surfaces, and custom-made furniture were all crafted from natural materials. A wood-burning masonry heater provides warmth, supplemented by wall heating that creates pleasant radiant heat. Historical family furniture was restored and reintegrated into the house.
The Richterhaus boasts a superbly equipped kitchen and a carefully curated selection of certified organic wines. Guests are welcome to help themselves to the herbs, berries, and fruits in the garden, and may even pick their own depending on the season.
Housekeeping is handled by an employee from the neighboring village. Fair and local cooperation was also a priority during the restoration: unemployed tradespeople were given well-paid employment, including room and board, for the duration of the construction.
During the restoration and furnishing of the Richterhaus natural and, wherever possible, regional materials were used: clay, natural lime, linseed oil, and wood wool, as well as timber from the nearby forest, which was harvested and processed on-site. The furnishings also prioritize materials and products with the smallest possible ecological footprint – from GOTS-certified organic textiles and a washable, recyclable mattress system to natural cosmetics. Waste separation, composting, and collecting water for garden irrigation are standard practice. Cleaning is done with environmentally friendly products. The Richterhaus boasts a superbly equipped kitchen and a selection of handcrafted wines. Meals can be enjoyed in the cozy parlor, the garden pavilion, or the garden. Barbecues are available year-round, and relaxation awaits in the garden sauna with an outdoor hot/cold shower. A small library with over 400 books offers something for everyone.
