The landscape around Circusvognen on Ærø is hilly, lively and full of details. Every season offers a new play of colours from trees, plants and flowers against the backdrop of the South Funen archipelago, where you can see the Baltic Sea ferries passing by.
And in the middle of it all, there is a circus wagon on a meadow, which creates a colorful contrast and at the same time a successful unity with nature. Anna, David and their children Lulu and Mimi have built this extraordinary accommodation for their guests. The circus wagon was built in the GDR about fifty years ago. In 2021, the family bought the wagon, shortly after they moved to the island themselves, and have extensively renovated and expanded it. The crazy artwork on the outside wall was designed by Jonas Pihl. Inside there are warm colors, lots of wood and cozy furnishings.
As a holiday resort, Circusvognen is the perfect mix of nostalgia, romance and creativity. Goats, sheep and horses graze right in front of the wagon, welcoming all guests with curiosity. The huge terrace invites you to read, play, eat, doze, stargaze and relax together. The peace and quiet is wonderful!
There are a wide range of cycling tours on the island that lead along the coast or through small, charming towns. Hiking, cycling and bird watching invite you to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Every day begins with regional delicacies. Fresh bread, tasty cheese, fruity jams and strong coffee are the perfect start to a new day. Off to Denmark!

ArchitectureThe wagon's original design as a mobile home for circus artists has been preserved. Local craftsmen were commissioned to rebuild the wagon and, whenever possible, local and recycled materials were used, either from the wagon itself or sourced locally. The artist Jonas Pihl painted the wagon and drew a dreamlike yet whimsical universe.
FoodSeasonal, local and organic food is used. Most ingredients are sourced from local producers on Ærø and Funen, including organic flour from Kragegaarden, butter from Naturmælk and artisan cheeses such as Gammel Knas from Arla Unika. The cold cuts and side dishes are also made from local and seasonal ingredients and reflect what is available at the time. For dinner, you can order cold cuts and cheese platters at the Marstang Mad & Vin restaurant, which works exclusively with local producers.
EnvironmentEnergy consumption is reduced through energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting. Garbage is carefully separated. Water-saving fittings reduce water consumption. Only environmentally friendly products that are biodegradable are used for cleaning.
