Casa do Eirado

Portimão, Algarve, Portugal

Feasting is just one of the many things you can do at Casa do Eirado. The Algarvian coast is popular because of its numerous beautiful sandy beaches and diverse water sports. But also the hinterland, in which the Casa is located, has its own beauty and offers the guest pure relaxation.

The Casa do Eirado is a good example of the architecture typical of the Algarve: lime, wood, stone and terracotta are the traditional materials used in the construction and the 2010 renovation. The very spacious Casa with 280 square meters and the almost complete absence of decorative elements creates space for the essentials and transports the guest to a time when life was not yet burdened with too much superfluous things. The tasteful, simple interior supports this character. Thick walls ensure a pleasant indoor climate even in midsummer.

The property includes a private garden, where you can relax, read a book or let your gaze wander over the surrounding mountains. In the evening you can watch a spectacular sunset here. At the end of the property there is a small barn with chickens, turkeys and ducks. If you want and wake up early enough, you can help the operator of the Casa during the harvest season, pick figs or apricots. Of course you can also just walk through the orchard and take some delicious plums, oranges or artichokes with you for lunch. There is a grill on the large terrace where you can prepare tasty fish and meat dishes.

Sustainable

ArchitectureThe Casa do Eirado is a piece of authentic Portuguese architecture. Lime, wood, stone and terracotta are the materials used in the construction and renovation in 2010. Thick walls ensure a pleasant indoor climate even in midsummer.

FoodThe house is designed for self-catering. Fresh eggs from the home-grown organic chickens are available. Those who like fresh fruit will get their money's worth at the Casa: during the season, apricots, plums, grapes, mulberries, citrus fruits, pomegranate and quinces can be picked directly from the tree.

EnvironmentWater is a valuable commodity in the region. The rainwater is therefore collected on the property of Casa Eirado and stored in an underground cistern. The previously filtered and sterilized water is automatically pumped into the house. The orchard around the house is irrigated via a drip irrigation system, which is fed by a surface tank. On hot days, the tank serves as a swimming pool. Solar panels heat the hot water for the house. The electricity required is produced by a photovoltaic system. Wood from the property is used for the two stoves in the house. In order to avoid energy losses, the 50 centimeter thick house walls were insulated and double-glazed windows were used. Environmental protection is very important to the owner of the Casa - accordingly, the cleaning staff, the pool cleaner and the gardener were instructed on such behavior. The owner of the casa aims to preserve the regional biodiversity. Therefore, various native plants are cared for and cared for in the countryside around the Casa do Eirado, including 13 different types of almonds, ten types of figs, six types of plums and three different carob trees. All leftovers are fed to the chickens, ducks and turkeys on the property to minimize waste production as much as possible.
